YOUR RIGHTS FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT

Recommended repairer schemes operated by leading insurance companies are schemes under which insurance companies recommend to their policy-holders, bodyshops which may begin work on damaged vehicles without further authorisation.
The Director General of Fair Trading has commented that much of the perceived unfairness of these schemes can be traced to an imperfect understanding of their rights by customers.

In order to help explain customer's rights following an accident more clearly, the Retail Motor Industries leading trade associations, the RMI and SMTA have issued the following statement for adoption by the insurance repair industry:

  • Insurance and other "approved" or "recommended" repairer schemes are an increasing feature in the body repiar industry.
  • Under the terms of most insurance policies customers are, however, able to have their vehicle repairs carried out at a body repair centre of their choice.
  • In such circimstances an insurance engineer's inspection of the damaged vehicle may be requested before repairs can be authorised.
  • Where necessary, inspections should be arranged promptly in order to minimise delays in repairs.

(The RMI and SMTA represent the interests of more than 4,500 businesses undertaking insurance accident repair work within the UK)
